Oh the fun to be had writing flash fiction, it really is addictive...
Here's my latest five sentence creation - thanks as ever go to Lillie McFerrin for hosting such a great contest...
Joy
She never suited her first name; her demeanour was decidedly
grumpy.
Even when she turned up at work wearing a diamond engagement
ring the corners of her mouth were resolutely flattened displaying no emotion.
Wedding invites were hand delivered without fuss, standard
white envelopes addressed in neat printed script.
My immediate reaction was, bloody cheek no “plus one” after
my name; then I caught sight of the groom’s most unusual surname - Less.
I flashed a genuine smile of joyful delight as I accepted
her kind invitation; her married name would suit her perfectly.
(Apologies to those people I know called Joy who are little rays of sunshine!)
This is such a fun story, didn't expect the end at all :)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because the ending is where I started with this tale - comes from a comment made by a friend about someone she knows, all the Joys I know are lovely!
DeleteI did a double take at the end...very cute, Stacy! And, yes, I agree with you about flash fiction challenges and about rays of sunshine named Joy!
ReplyDeleteStacy?? Who on earth is Stacy?! Sarah!!!! I know it's Sarah! Good grief. I have to stop corresponding at the lunch break. Anyways, Sarah, I really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteStacy - oh she's just some other writer we know LOL ;-)
DeleteI love it when you make me smile, and that did! Very original!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa - always like to leave people smiling :-)
DeleteA delightful, whimsical read! Ahh yes, a name is not always an apt description. Hopefully her last name will prove the catalyst for a change of demeanor instead!
